maitchy commented on the word dresden shepherdesses
Dresden shepherdesses (and shepherds) are porcelain figurines with a distinctive (idealised, almost translucent) style from a factory in Meissen (close to Dresden, Germany) that have been popular since the 18th Century, and the phrase "Dresden shepherdesses" (along with German bands) was used to characterize the image/feeling of the area by Arthur ("Bomber") Harris in defending the area-bombing of Dresden in World War 2 when Churchill described it as a terror campaign.
